The Division of Hospital Medicine is one of the newest divisions in the Department of Medicine at Washington University School of Medicine. Formed in a collaboration between Dr. Mark Thoelke and Dr. John Lynch in 2000, the division has grown from five physicians to over fifty physicians and allied clinicians. We provide the highest quality medical care for patients whose primary care physicians do not round at Barnes-Jewish Hospital — roughly half of all internal medicine patients at BJH. In addition, we oversee the Gold Service, providing care in conjunction with primary physicians and specialists who continue to attend to their patients at Barnes-Jewish Hospital.
The division faculty are integral to the educational mission of the Department, providing attending coverage for the firm (teaching) service, the Medicine Consult service, and the Procedure service. Hospital Medicine faculty have also led or participated in many of the quality improvement efforts surrounding hospitalized patient care at BJH.
